Thunkfish - Renegades of Pthronk

Thunkfish are the sole entity at the forefront of the not-quite nascent PTHRONK scene. They are a tight, yet unpredictable blend of jazz, punk, thrash, prog and funk, with influences from Headhunters to Metallica: One moment head-nodding, infectious grooves, escalating to mosh-pit intensity, one minute rhythmically ambiguous and expansive.

A two-horned front line of Tom Pickles & Charles Dearness (saxophones/trumpet) are backed by a power trio of Jed Potts (electric guitar), Richard Kass (drums), and Tom Wilkinson (electric bass). The sixth member of the live band is a set of disembodied voices in a black box, containing obscure and vintage samples, from BBC continuity announcers to 1970s sci-fi radio plays.

The band recorded and released their debut EP in the summer of 2013, alongside a residency at Edinburgh’s Jazz Bar during the Fringe, and their festival debuts, including Edinburgh and Aberdeen Jazz Festivals, as well as opening the pop-up multimedia ‘Hidden Door’ festival in 2014. In May 2015, following a session for BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Jazz House’ they release a single, ‘Renegades of Pthronk’ – representing a new, heavier, more succinct sound, as a preview of their debut album which is scheduled for release in the 2nd half of the year…

“grabs you by the lapels and just doesn’t let go…”
Stephen Duffy, BBC Radio Scotland – The Jazz House
